“Hmm…” You hummed lowly as you stretched your cramped body against the car seat.

“Restless, [First]?” asked Levi smugly, seemingly not at all bothered from the ridiculous amount of hours you’d both spent in this damnable car.

“How are you not? Jesus we’ve been sitting in this fucking car for thirteen hours. My ass hurts.”

“Ah, that’s not good, is it? You can sit on my lap if you want.” Despite his joking attitude you were sorely tempted to sit on him. His lap looked far more comfortable than the leather seats your ass was currently parked on.

Before you could open your mouth to make a snide comment, Levi interrupted, “But it’s not all bad, right? You had a good time today, didn’t you?”

You leaned back on the seat and smiled contentedly. “Yeah, I did.”

It was unexpected, this day that you had with him; out of nowhere Levi had decided to kick you out of bed before the sun even peaked over the horizon and said you were going on a road trip. At first you were reluctant, after all, it was barely four in the morning, and it’d be insane if you were motivated to go right off the bat. So, naturally, you fought his sudden demand and buried yourself in your blanket, to which he simply replied by pouring a jug of ice cold water on you – and it had been done so quickly that you could only assume he prepared for it beforehand.

So, much to your displeasure, you peeled yourself from the cold wetness of the sheets and got yourself cleaned up for what you assumed would be a day of absolute hell with your strangely spontaneous boyfriend.

But, what was also unexpected, a day you originally thought would be downright shitty ended up being very enjoyable. The two of you travelled over Europe – one good thing about living there was just how close every other country was. You lived together on the outskirts of Lyon and had decided to take a trip to the ever-beautiful Italian countryside.

Your time together mostly consisted of lame jokes no one else would laugh at and tasting fine cheeses and wine. There was nothing fanciful thrown in at all, you only had each other’s company and the scenery surrounding you. It was enough for you.

Plus, you’d be lying if you said you didn’t enjoy sneaking in those quick tumbles whenever you were out of the line of sight of prying eyes.

But the sun had been and gone, and now you were driving along the streets of France back to your cosy little apartment building. You turned your head in Levi’s direction and watched him silently. Seeing him in front of the glamorous lights of the city made your heart flutter. It made you unfathomably happy to know that you had managed to meet someone as beautiful as him. It made you happier still to know that he loved you as you loved him.

He caught sight of your ogling and gingerly traced his fingers over the back of your hand. “Something on your mind, brat?”

“Just you,” you replied.

He clicked his tongue against his teeth as he almost felt flustered at your words. “Cute. Is that your way of trying to seduce me?”

“That depends, is it working?”

“Wait ‘til we get home and find out.”

You smiled a bit and turned your face to the front, watching the road in front of you as the two of you sat in silence for a while. It was very soothing to you. Your eyes drifted shut as you allowed yourself to relax.

Soon the serenity of the car had been broken when Levi raised his voice once more, “What do you think of marriage?”

You creased your brows a bit, your eyes never opening as you answered, “An odd question.”

“Just answer it.”

“Mmh… well I don’t know. I haven’t really cared much for it before, but I think I could see myself walking down the aisle. With the right guy, of course.”

“I see.”

“What do you think of marriage?” you asked.

“The same as you, more or less. Didn’t think it was anything special, or at least, not anything special for me. But if it was with you…” Levi’s words trailed off, but what he said had been enough to pique your interest.

You opened your eyes and looked directly at him, “Levi are you--”

“Look in the glove box,” he ordered.

You didn’t bother to protest and simply did as he said. You pulled the handle and released the lock, slowly lowering the hatch and revealing a small velvet box inside. Your heart hammered relentlessly against your ribcage and your palms drenched in sweat. You reached your trembling fingers into the compartment and took out the box inside.

After flashing Levi a brief glance you opened it, revealing a ring inside encrusted with white opals. In that moment you felt your heart stop and your breathing cease. Staring at that ring, that small piece of jewellery neatly encased in a box, turned your whole world upside down. If you hadn’t been sitting in a car, you’d probably have leapt onto Levi and drowned him in affection, but of course he had to pick the most awkward time to do this. Not surprising, considering he did the same thing just this morning.

Levi looked on, his nerves wracking with anxiety but his face remaining stoic. He honestly didn’t know what he’d do if you refused his proposal, but he hoped that you wouldn’t. That would be awkward – and Levi was terrible with awkward.

“I…” You couldn’t even find the strength to form a sentence. You were just so mesmerised by what was happening to you right now that your voice was all but lost. Tears pooled at the corners of your eyes. “Of course I’ll marry you!” you blurted out.

It came as a sincere relief to him to hear you say those words. “Took you long enough, brat.”

“Don’t ruin this, Levi.”

You wore the ring on your finger and gazed at it longingly for the remainder of the car ride. Life was about to get a lot more interesting, and whatever would come in the future, you would face it fearlessly with your new fiancé.
